This feasibility study for the underused garages adjoining Watney Market in Shadwell focused on developing a strategic approach to better connect the market to the broader context of Whitechapel and Wapping. Research into potential future uses for the primarily hidden garages and opportunities for opening them to the public realm was considered to support the market and the local community in this area.
Together with improvements in the public realm along the road, we explored adjustments that focused on supporting active travel and integrating the market with the high street. To extend the market activity onto Commercial Road, kiosk structures and new entrances to secure bike parking in the below-ground car park were proposed. Along Commercial Road, the continuous sustainable urban drainage garden connects the market to a proposed pocket park, creating a greener environment and buffer to the busy road.
